The Harpa International Music Academy is an exciting music festival for students of
all ages and instruments.
In just 11 days, you will study with international faculty and meet fellow students from Iceland and around the world.
Private lessons, chamber music, masterclasses, solo performances and symphony orchestra will inspire you to work hard and become a better musician,
while having a great time under
Iceland's midnight sun.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

June 7th at 12:00 Young Rising Stars
The talented Johan Dalene from Sweden and Maya Buchanan from Chicago perform beautiful and virtuosic pieces for violin and piano. Both are only 17 years old but have won many prizes in local and international competitions.

June 7th at 20:00 Opening Concert - String Quartets 
Participants in Sibbi Bernhardsson’s intensive string quartet seminar will perform string quartets.

June 10th at 10:00 Violin Masterclass with Almita Vamos
Currently a faculty member at Chicago’s Roosevelt University, Almita Vamos has been one of the most respected violin teachers in the United States for several decades. 

June 10th at 13:00 Cello Masterclass with Morten Zeuthen
Morten Zeuthen has been highly influential in Danish musical life for decades, as professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Music since 1996 and principal cellist of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra for 20 years before that. 

June 10th at 17:00 Faculty Recital 

The Academy’s faculty members are also excellent performers. In this concert they share their talents in a varied program of chamber or solo works.

June 13th at 17:00 Senior Division Student Recital

The Academy’s Senior Division is made up of 75 music students from 9 countries, who are 10 – 26 years old. In this concert, a selection of students will perform a varied program of solo and/ or chamber music works they’ve studied with Academy faculty.

June 13th at 20:00 Violin Recital with Dan Zhu 
Dan Zhu is one of China’s best known violinists. Since performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in Carnegie Hall at the age of 18, he has travelled around the world as a performing and recording artist. He is joined by pianist Julien Quentin in a program including the Franck Violin Sonata and Wieniawski’s Faust Fantasy.

June 14th, 15th,16th at 17:00 and 20:00 Student Recital Series 

Participants of the Academy play solo performances and chamber works at Tónskóli Sigursveins, Engjateigur 1. Free admission.

June 17th at 10:00 Junior Division Student Recital

The Academy’s Junior Division is made of up 38 music students, who are 10 – 14 years old. In this concert, junior chamber groups will perform a selection of works.

June 17th at 12:00 Senior Division Student Recital
The Academy’s Senior Division is made up of 75 music students from 9 countries, who are 10 – 26 years old. In this concert, piano students will perform a varied program of solo and/ or chamber music works they’ve studied with Academy faculty.

June 17th at 17:00 Festival Concert
On Iceland’s Independence Day, the Academy Orchestra performs Tchaikovsky’s 6th Symphony and the Wind Serenade by Strauss. Johan Dalene brings us the world of gypsies with Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen, and the Academy’s youngest participants perform in the junior orchestra.
